Enhancing human health here on Earth is an important by-product of NASA’s technology research and development for the space program. Low-energy lighting used to grow edible plants in space during long duration missions has been repurposed for treating painful lesions caused by chemotherapy, and technologies developed to make astronauts safer and more comfortable during take-off have even been applied to improve infant car seats.
